Images of England - St Pauls & St Werburghs

by Veronica Smith

Part of the enormous Images of England series, this book acts as a showcase for begged and borrowed images of St.Werburghs and St.Pauls in the past.

Although the better known St.Pauls predominates as expected there are more than a dozen images of St.Werburghs.Veronica Smith draws heavily upon well-known sources such as Bristol Evening Post and the Mike Tozer collection. She also obviously gained access to the Brooks archive which is perhaps over represented here.

In the tradition of this series the text is minimal, being a visual treat rather than a serious local history study.

However there are some very evocative pictures within these covers, especially of the long gone corner shop on Watercress Road.

Overall an enjoyable browse but there are many more old pictures of St.Werburghs out there.
