Another time, another place - the life of Bill Shepherd of Ashley Vale 1910-1999

Published by the vintage motorcycle club, Bristol.ISBN number 0-9519139-9-9

This book gathers the diaries of a St Werburghs man and motorbike enthusiast, Bill Sheppherd. It is beautifully produced with numerous full colour plates of photographs, letters and memorabilia.

The writing, left uncorrected, reflects the views of a man born at the end of the Edwardian age in a working class area of Bristol. It is full of vivid memories - he describes walking with his father on Narroways Hill before WW1 and seeing his first aeroplane, a Bristol Box Kite. It was from the same viewpoint 90 years later I chose to watch Concorde's last flight.

There are other glimpses of the past - the hardness of life and the freedoms that came with days out and motorbike rides. Most poignantly the book reproduces his diaries from the last three days of his life. An ordinary life but unique and worth remembering.
